Checkpoint 6: Lim Bo Seng Memorial

Major-General Lim Bo Seng- A World War II anti-Japanese resistance fighter. He was born to a wealthy businessman who owned a biscuit and brick manufacturing business in Singapore. He was the first male child in the family despite being the 11th child.

Lim was an active contributor of the China Relief Fund, he was later the Director of the Labour Service Department in the newly formed Singapore Chinese Mobilisation Council. Lim was later involved in resistance network called Force 136 during WWII

The Lim Bo Seng Memorial Committee erected the pagoda-like memorial in Lim's honour. The memorial was unveiled on 29 June, 1954.

Lim Bo Seng was discovered and captured by the Japanese on 27 March 1944. He was taken to the Kempeitai headquarters for interrogation. Although he was subjected to all sorts of physical and mental torture, Lim refused to provide any information on Force 136.

im Bo Seng died in the early hours of 29 June, 1944, at the age of 35, due to the torture, ill-treatment and the unhygienic condition of the prison, Lim became bedridden by June of 1944.

He was buried in the compound of the Batu Gajah Prison.

A funeral service was held on 13 January 1946 at City Hall to mourn Lim Bo Seng's death. Lim's remains was transported in a coffin to a hill in MacRitchie Reservoir for burial with full military honours. Lim was posthumously awarded the rank of Major-General by the Chinese Nationalist Government.

Despite not being born in Singapore, Lim showed strong resistance, and literally died for the country. His strong determination helped to keep many other Force 136 members alive.
