Checkpoint 7: Indian National Army Marker

The Indian National Army Marker was erected in 1995 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and is part of a series of 11 World War II sites in Singapore.

This marker is dedicated to the unknown soldiers of the Indian National Army who died during World War II.

A memorial dedicated to the "Unknown Warrior" of the INA was constructed at the Esplanade in the final months of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore.

The Urdu words inscribed on the monument read: ITTEFAQ (unity), ITMAD (faith) and KURBANI (sacrifice).

The initial monument was demolished barely two months later, following the British re-takeover of Singapore in 1945 as the British government considered Subhas Chandra Bose* as a rebel

*Subhas Chandra Bose was flown to Singapore and became commander of the INA . He had the support of the Japanese government in his help to fight the British.
